Description
The Bürgerbrunnen (Citizens' Fountain) is a monumental sculptural fountain located in the heart of Osnabrück's Old Town. Designed by the artist Hans-Gerd Ruwe and inaugurated in 1985, it was created to commemorate the city's 1200th anniversary. The fountain is an example of late 20th-century German narrative public art. It functions like a three-dimensional history book, using a rich selection of figurative bronze sculptures that narrate the history of Osnabrück. Among the most prominent figures is Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at the top, who granted the city its rights in 1171. The lion in the large basin represents the jurisdiction granted to Duke Henry the Lion. The fountain is replete with detailed reliefs and figures representing all facets of urban life: commerce, defense, agriculture, religion, justice, and mortality.
