Description

I painted this piece based on a LEGO flower bouquet that was given to us as decoration for our apartment. The "flowers" are assembled blocks: square, pointed petals of intense red, thick stems of green plastic, and yellow centers with the characteristic relief of Danish bricks. The bouquet is positioned in an elegant porcelain vase near a window. A group of colorful birds are attracted by the color of the artificial bouquet, but upon arriving, they wonder what kind of strange flowers they are. Their heads tilt, their beaks slightly open, their small black eyes fixed on the flowers with a mixture of curiosity and bewilderment. One seems about to peck at a petal, but stops, bewildered by its geometric rigidity. There is no fragrance, no pollen, no life. Only color and inert order. This painting is a critique of the popularity of the artificial in contemporary homes. Today, it is common to find plastic, LEGO, fabric, or resin flowers in apartments. Why do we substitute the living for the inert? In a hyper-accelerated society, the real flower demands care: water, light, pruning, daily attention. The artificial flower offers beauty without responsibility. It is the promise of nature domesticated by efficiency: it doesn't wilt, it doesn't stain, it doesn't attract insects. It fits into the aesthetics of productivity: maintenance-free decoration, timeless nature.
